Finding this type of research is rare.
If you can get your hands on it, this book documents, with supporting microscopic evidence from extant pieces, when armour was started to be tempered and when they stopped bothering in England. It also documents prices of steel being 4 times higher than iron and that a single piece of armor could range from wrought iron to high carbon steel. It also has a picture of period armoring stakes from the Tower that match the woodcuts well. - Matthias , posted 11/19/05
