What is the foundation of Druidic magic[k]? Is there an underlying principle which powers everything Bards do? The simple answer is Yes! It is a primordial life force called Awen. (It is called Imbas in Ireland, Chi in East Asia, Spirit in temples worldwide and The Force in Star Wars movies.) In Druidic magick, Awen is the power and the original source of all known and unknown worlds.
Awen is a magickal energy that flows throughout the universe. Bards believe that Awen is the magickal fabric that everything is made of. Awen is the intense energy that fills us when we experience the beautiful mystery of our place in the world.
“An understanding of Awen is fundamental to Bardism: it underpins and influences everything we do. It is deceptively simple and incredibly complex…It is a Welsh word meaning ‘inspiration,’ but what is it to be inspired but to be in-spirited, to be taken over by the Spirit; be it in the form of the Muse, Poetic Genius, Goddess, a creative frenzy a fire in the head…Awen is pronounced: Aah-OO-When… it is universal, it is Spirit…whatever our cultural frame of reference.” [1]
“To our most ancient ancestors the universe must have been an incomprehensible place yet we know that Awen (by any other name) was recognized early as the key to understanding our place in existence…Awen is a force or energy forged from an indivisible source that is the power behind physical and non-physical existence.” [2]
To Bards, Awen is also seen as an ever-flowing river of magickal existence. Stepping into this flow is possible for everyone. Recognizing and inviting Awen into our lives involves learning to recognize our own soul within the big picture of the universe, and having the courage to express the truth of it.
Every object is a reflection of Awen. Everything surrounding you and within you – both seen and unseen – has its own share of Awen. Druidic magick taps into Awen, which is timeless and indestructible. Awen is the oneness of spirit, a unity where all things are related and where all things connect. Differences between the natural and the magickal blur, because both are the expressions of Awen. Bards believe that Awen is given to us in three forms, which are:
Spirit: Awen reveals itself as the life-force within us. Awen is the spiritual spark within plants and animals – rocks, rivers, and clouds – everything found within the realms of land, water and sky.
Inspiration: Awen shows itself as a driving force that pushes us to be creative. Awen changes our thoughts from ordinary to magickal – helping us push ourselves to record our insight with words and music.
Illumination: Awen changes us at the deepest level to make us see things in a different light. Through Awen illuming our way, we are able to gain knowledge about seen and unseen realms.
“To discover what Awen is… first look at what the word means. The feminine noun, Awen, has been variously translated as 'inspiration', 'muse', 'genius', or even 'poetic frenzy'. The word itself is formed by combining the two words: aw, meaning 'a fluid, a flowing', and en, meaning 'a living principle, a being, a spirit, [or] essential'. So Awen may be rendered literally as 'a fluid essence', or 'flowing spirit'…” [3]
Awen can come to you as a shock – like a lightning bolt of awakening that frees you from limitations – opening you to a new expanded perspective. Receiving Awen from an outside source – symbolized by \|/ – is called evoking. There are several ways to know when Awen is evoked:
Divinity: You feel sudden magickal awareness – sometimes with a lightheaded or tingly body sensation – which teaches you profound new ideas and meanings.
Nature: You connect with nature sounds and scenes, leading to excitement and an inner knowing, making you feel like you are one aspect of all of the world’s wonders.
Senses: You experience nature, music, poetry, stories, and things of deep beauty and meaning, giving you new awareness, sometimes with heightened sight and hearing.
There are ways in which you can work towards receiving Awen. Using activities to receive Awen – symbolized by /|\ – is called invoking. There are several ways to invoke Awen:
Ceremony: You experience euphoria (extreme emotion) within ritual – a new awareness of reality – including glimpses into the true meaning of your rite and a connection to other ritual participants.
Contemplation: Your studies and deep thinking about nature and Druidic works lead to “understanding the universe,” unlocking an inner knowledge that you never knew you had.
Creativity: While creating music, songs, poetry, and stories, you touch Awen – often an overwhelming feeling that you are crafting work on different levels of existence (magickal, spiritual, etc.) all at once.
Finding Awen means reaching into the source of flowing universal energy. Awen can be felt in many ways, including mental clarity and physical ecstasy.
Remember that Awen is always within reach, because it flows through every part of us. The more you connect with Awen, the easier it is to find it and let it flow through you. Awen also means the web of spirit connectedness between all beings and things. Every part of creation – including you – is full of Awen. Awen is another word for Spirit.
