Druid Womb: Celtic Magick and Song
moderated and created 07/29/06
The Druid Womb tribe is a crossroads for female* and male Druids. Our tribe is a kalidescope of magick** and song.***
Who were/are the Druids?
In ancient Celtic society the female and male Druids composed an intellectual and spiritual elite, whose knowledge and training placed them as the academics, clerics, poets, and judicial branch of the Celtic pan-European religion: it is highly likely that the Druids were a caste at one time. Their (usually 20 year) training consisted of the memorization of literature, poetry, history, and Celtic law as well as astronomy and other sciences. In their spiritual function, the Druids mediated for their people, preformed sacrifices, interpreted omens, and presided over religious ceremonies. Today teachings, stories, and tenets of Druidism are 'living spirituality' in the form of Celtic Reconstructionism, Neo-Druidism, and Celtic Paganism.
The word - druid - is an anglicized and probably 'Latinized' form of the Gaulish "druvis." The word itself has been subject to intense speculation as to its origins, though most scholars associate it with the Greek "drus" meaning oak. An alternate, and perhaps better explanation is based on the Indo-European roots *deru, meaning "steadfast" or "strong," and *wid, which is connected with knowledge, and wisdom. Hence, the original word may have been something like *deruwid, meaning "one of steadfast knowledge."
*More on female Druids?
The relative position of men and women in Druidry is quite clear and quite unambiguous. In all aspects of Druidry, both men and women are seen to be fully equal. Men and women follow the same course of study, achieve the same grades, conduct the same ceremonies and are accorded the same respect and deference. Most druids regard the idea of distinction or discrimination in spiritual matters being based on physical differences of gender incomprehensible, offensive and ludicrous . There are three specific reasons for this. Firstly, there is a long tradition of female Druids: many recorded by the Roman writers Tacitus, Lampridius and Vopiscus, and some by the poets Taliesin and Amergin. Secondly, Druids regard the male and female aspects in Nature and the Spiritual Realms to have equal weight and worthy of equal respect as they both proceed from the one Divine Source wherein ALL Nature is subsumed. Thirdly, the Druidic belief in shapeshifting / transmogrification suggests that we have been, and will continue to be reincarnated in such physical forms as will best aid our spiritual development. As we occupy bodies of both genders from time to time, any form of sexual discrimination clearly becomes self-inflicted and pointless.
