Lil' girl...
Johnny Depp was amazing, and much spookier than the Gede Wilder Version, which is true to Roald Dahl's vision. He portrays Wonka as an adult child with few social skills, having never been able to develop them, who chooses to live entirely in his imagination when faced with the alternative of having none. He responds to the spoiled children with his own childish behavior--"Lil' boy, you really shouldn't mumble because I CAN"T HEAR ANYTHING YOU"RE SAYING!!!" I *love* the way he refuses to remember the names of the children, and calls them all "lil' boy" or "lil' girl." It's perfect. He's SO snotty. =0) The only thing I did not particularly like or understand was the Small World-esque puppet show as the Golden Ticket winner's first enter the factory. It felt out of place, and was a moment where it seems Tim Burton was trying to forcefully insert himself into the story, where in all other aspects of the film he relies on his direction to color this interpretation of the book.
