probably more true (and morbid) to the Dahl book
Even though I grew up on the Gene Wilder version, I enjoyed this version too, but they are very different. This version is far darker, with a more neurotic, twisted Wonka. The special effects are great, and the Oopma Loompa scenes are overproduced, but still amazing! - Jenni , posted 12/13/05

Surprise
At first being a fan of the original "Willie Wonka" movie as a kid... I assumed I would not like this "remake". I was also not one of Johnny's biggest fans. HOWEVER... I totally loved this film and found it surprsingly to be a better "remake" of the original.. It was definatly not a "kids flick" and there is a lot of humor that will go right over your head if your under 30 lol I was totally fascinated by Johnny Depp's portrayel of this "creature" lol Johnny has now emerged as one of my favorite Actors of this day! I wouldnt be surprised if he turns up with an Oscar nom for this role... I pick it as the summer hit of 2005... much better than watching Aliens destroy my city! ;-) - John , posted 09/01/05

Lil' girl...
Johnny Depp was amazing, and much spookier than the Gede Wilder Version, which is true to Roald Dahl's vision. He portrays Wonka as an adult child with few social skills, having never been able to develop them, who chooses to live entirely in his imagination when faced with the alternative of having none. He responds to the spoiled children with his own childish behavior--"Lil' boy, you really shouldn't mumble because I CAN"T HEAR ANYTHING YOU"RE SAYING!!!" I *love* the way he refuses to remember the names of the children, and calls them all "lil' boy" or "lil' girl." It's perfect. He's SO snotty. =0) The only thing I did not particularly like or understand was the Small World-esque puppet show as the Golden Ticket winner's first enter the factory. It felt out of place, and was a moment where it seems Tim Burton was trying to forcefully insert himself into the story, where in all other aspects of the film he relies on his direction to color this interpretation of the book. - MoonSong , posted 07/31/05
