The greatest little tea shop
Chaikhana Tea Culture is a Santa Cruz treasure. The owners embody the spirit of tea: sharing. Next to downtown Santa Cruz on Cedar Street across from the Bagelry, Kuumba Jazz Center and Poet & Patriot Pub, Chaikhana has that iconic Santa Cruzan quirkiness. David and his wife MaryLee (with newly born son) share generously of their love and knowledge of tea, as well as their interesting conversation.

The definition of "chaikhana" (www.poetry-chaikhana.com/about.htm):

A chaikhana is a teahouse along the legendary Silk Road pilgrimage and trading route linking China to the Middle East and Europe. It is a place of rest along the journey, a place to shake off the dust of the road, to sip tea, and to gather together to sing songs of the Divine...

Chaikhana tea culture fits its namesake and more. David is also an avid collector of antiques; his shop is also an extension of that interest. Chaikhana carries a large selection of teaware in its small space, much of it antiques, which he is very knowledgable about. Chaikhana carries mostly asian teas: whites, yellows, many pu-erhs (which David is extremely fond of), greens, oolongs, mostly asian blacks (sometimes referred to as red tea). They also stock some herbal blends, display teas which open up into interesting shapes when steeping, and a few Indian black teas. Their selection often changes to reflect what the current season has produced and interesting finds.

Chaikhana is not just a place to buy tea and teaware — it is a place to enter the culture of tea and its preparation. - John , posted 03/04/07
